MARIAH'S
A RAINING QUEEN
Stunning
Mariah Carey struggles to keep her head above water
as she shoots the video for her new single Through
the Rain.
And the pop beauty, 32, knows it’s sink or swim time for her
career, too. Her lastest album, Glitter, flopped — leading Virgin bosses to dump
her with a £38million pay-off.

is due release a new album in December. The last thing she needs is a damp squib

IDOL
BREAKS SPELL
Winner Kelly Clarkson is represented by
four tunes. And, in many ways, her success is the most easy to grasp aspect of
the "Idol" phenomenon. For the past two decades in pop, a girl-next-door singer
with a big voice (and sometimes even bigger hair) generally has ascended to
extraordinary popularity in the wake of some questionable music trend. In the
'80s, Whitney Houston blew all the chirpy new wavers from the chart. Mariah
Carey rose to fame in the dance pop '90s, when acts like Milli Vanilli, Blackbox
and C&C Music Factory were exposed as lipsyncing frauds. And now, after the
death of teen pop, here comes Clarkson.
Her chops are undeniable, as is her
breathy debt to Carey. But if she wants to be a star, she's going to need better
songs. "Moment Like This," the current No. 1 single, works largely because the
sentiment fits perfectly with the dreams-come-true vibe of the show. Who can
forget her crying on the final episode, while singing the line, "Oh, I can't
believe it's happening to me"?

Mariah's
new song hits radio today
Mariah Carey is back.
Her new single "Through the Rain," which was
produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, debuted on MTV
Network websites Wednesday and will hit the radio
waves today.
The songbird will also hit stations
across the nation to promote the song and the new album, which is still
untitled, but is expected in stores December 10 -- just in time for Christmas.
This will be Carey's Island Def Jam
debut. The album will be released on Carey's MonarC Music imprint under the IDJ
umbrella.
This is Carey's third label.
She was recently with Virgin after
ending her long-time deal with Sony's Columbia Records. However, after poor
sales of her first and only LP under the Virgin label, "Glitter," she was
released from her contract with a $30 million buyout.

A
MASTERPIECE DELIVERED TO PERFECTION
With as much adversity as Mariah Carey has had to
withstand, It’s hard to believe that she’s been able
to pick herself up, dust herself off, and deliver
another outstanding record that defines the term
"superstar." There’s been much written about the
demise of the diva, but when you possess as much
talent as Mariah, it doesn’t have be redefined, just
redirected. Her signature sound has inspired many up
and coming artists for years. While she may not have
always made the best decisions regarding her career,
the fact remains that she’s one of the top
singer/songwriters of the last 15 years. Now comes
the song that everyone has wanted from Mariah, and
she delivers BIGTIME! It’s not just another ballad.
It’s a lyrical masterpiece delivered to perfection!
The excessive vocal aerobics that seem to plague
many singers are kept in check, and what you hear is
a vocal performance that exudes pure emotion and
passion. You can’t help but believe that this is one
of Mariah’s most personal songs to date. It’s her
light at the end of the tunnel. Some believe Mariah
is a Behind The Music episode waiting to happen, but
could her greatest achievement be yet to come? One
thing is for sure, Mariah has made it "Through The
Rain," but can this truly gifted superstar diva do
it again? BET ON IT! inconvenience

MARIAH:
DIVING BACK IN
Mariah Carey's imminent comeback and re-invention
may not involve music alone. A new album with her
new label, Island, is slated for a December 10
release, but there's also talk of Carey dipping her
feet back in the treacherous acting waters that
helped precipitate her breakdown last year. Although
Carey was universally panned for her performance in
the movie Glitter - which is fast achieving cult
status because it's sooooo bad - the BBC is
reportedly courting the singer for a huge role in a
new TV series. Well, a UK re-invention worked for
Madonna!
